This melody was first published in England circa 1780, was written by John Stafford Smith.The words were written by Ralph Tomlinson. Both were members of the Anacreonic Club of London. "To Anacreon in Heaven" was their theme song. The Anacreonic Club was a group of wealthy men who met to celebrate music, food, and drink. The Anacreonic Club took its name from Anacreon, a Greek poet (c.582-485 BC).

Anacreon was a Greek poet (c. 582 -485 BC.)  His poetry was devoted to the goddess of love, Aphrodite, and the god of wine, Dionysus. Anacreon's poetry emphasized elements of drinking, love, and revelry.
