One million tourists visit the Fort annually

The fort was named after James McHenry, an Irish-born soldier and statesman. He served as Secretary of War from 1796-1800.   The fort was finally completed in 1802. The fort served in the Mexican War and the Civil War. The fort was a hospital for WWI soldiers and a naval fire training school for WWII.

After the bombardment ended the Fort was refurbished. In 1829, new and stronger gun batteries were built.  Fort McHenry expanded the grounds and were used for recruiting and training. On July 20, 1912 the 141st Company of Coastal Artillery, the last active garrison, departed after nearly 125 years of active service to the country.
